Leucadendron gandogeri's strange growth form

This photograph was taken in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve at Hermanus and is of the Broad-leaf Conebush - Leucadendron gandogeri .  It is of particular interest because the cone pictured here is not terminal and is therefore a freak (ie. leaves are seen here growing out of the top of the cone).  Have a look at Leucadendron comosum comosum's Toupee.
