Vredefort Dome – 17-18 February 2001

Common Sugarbush - Photo: NBI Collection The next Protea Atlassing meet will be the weekend of 17 & 18 February in the Vredefort Dome area . The Vredefort Dome, after decades of speculation by geologists, is now recognised as the remnants of a huge metoerite crater. It is situated west of Parys on the Free State / North West border.

Protea species richness will certainly be lower than anywhere else I have atlassed before, but it is an important site for atlassing as it probably represents some of the westernmost distribution of Protea caffra in the Free State.

Noelline Kroon, an atlasser fron Vanderbijlpark, has scouted suitable areas to atlas. Accommodation details will be confirmed at a later date.

Please make a special effort to to atlassing in the underatlassed areas in these last three months of the project.
