Millennium Competition - January 2000

The answer to the competition is "Happy Y2k".

The letters are derived from the first letter of the species name of each protea. The genus is irrelevant for the purposes of the competition. The message therefore reads "happy vtook" which translates into "Happy Y2k". There are no proteas where the species name begins with "Y" and therefore a "V" was the next best letter! Too sneaky? You decide.

The hidden message is worked out as shown below:

Holosericea acuminata punctata pityphylla vellosa   Venusta tenax odorata olens kraussi

The winner is Lyn McCallum. Congratulations.

Determine the hidden message and submit a Protea conservation logo. You stand to win:

  • R100 book voucher from the Botanical Society book store at Kirstenbosch and
  • Any selected single item of protea atlas clothing ex our stock!

The millennium competition is in two parts:

1. Identify the below proteas and then determine what the hidden message is.

All the diagnostic features that you need to identify the proteas are visible.   Clues, keys, diagnostic features and much more are available on this web site - browse to your heart's content.  Have a look at Can you identify these proteas and the Protea Gallery. Alternatively, you may use the Sasol Proteas to identify the proteas.

2. Submit a Protea conservation logo of not more than 10 words.

Please remember to answer both Part 1 and Part 2!
