Hairystyle Sceptre - Paranomus adiantifoliusThe Hairystyle Sceptre must be one of the rarest of our proteas. Today less than 30 plants are known at three locations from Bot River to Wolfieskop. At least three other locations have existed in the past, but these are either "lost", or plants cannot be found at them. The Hairstyle Sceptre is related to the much more widespread King Gustav's Sceptre, and is just as spectacular! We have only seven records of this species. It probably flowers in spring, and grows in summer. Two of the three populations are threatened with alien invader species - Hakeas and Pines. Two of the three populations have less than 10 plants in them. How does one conserve a species for which we have no data? Such rarity poses problems in mapping species. With small populations it is easy to miss locations. This is where the wealth of knowledge that farmers and hikers have (often without realising just how precious their information is) is so important. You can make a difference!
