Sexual dimorphism in ConebushesLd pubescens has the biggest range in sexual dimorphism, with almost similar leaf sizes between sexes in some populations, and with female leaves over twice as large as those of males in others. Ld rubrum has the biggest difference between male and female: male flowerheads are 11 mm long and 5 mm in diameter compared to the mature female cone which is 55 mm long and 35 mm in diameter. This is not much bigger than the female flowerhead which is 40 mm long and 20 mm across. The small difference in size between the female flowerheads and cones (compared to some other conebushes) may be due to the small number of flowers and fruit produced - most of which are in the centre of the flowerhead-cone.
