Objectives of Protea Atlas Project

The primary objective is to inculcate an appreciation and understanding of our flora and its associated conservation issues in the general public.

Additional objectives, of no less importance, are:

Obtaining detailed distributional data of southern African protea species to determine patterns of biogeography and conservation status.

Obtaining seasonal data on pollination, growth, flowering, fire-survival strategies and age to maturity, so that the ecology of species can be better understood and optimal conservation strategies identified.

Obtaining data on possible threats to species, such as invasive alien plants, agriculture and urbanisation and flower harvesting, so that conservation action can be initiated.
