Proteas in Lesotho

I am not sure what data you have on proteas in Lesotho. They have diminished in numbers because of their popularity as firewood. In several areas the only remaining evidence is in place names, there being several villages named after proteas. Thus Liqalabeng in SE Lesotho, and several others with the name Likileng in northern Lesotho are named after proteas. The Sesotho names for any kind of Protea bush is respectively seqalaba and sekila in these areas, plurals liqalaba and likila and locatives in –eng). There is only one place left in Lesotho with a substantial Protea forest of a few thousand trees. Elsewhere I have only seen small numbers of relatively isolated trees.
David Ambrose, Maseru

We have no data at all of any proteas in Lesotho. It is one of our major gaps. If anyone would like to take up the mapping of Lesotho’s proteas, we will be happy to put you in contact with Prof. Ambrose.
