Agulhas Conebush Sterretjies - Leucadendron stelligerumThe Agulhas Conebush would be more appropriately named the Wolwengat Conebush. Its world-wide distribution is from Voelvlei to Wolwengat! And most of that land is now ploughed up. One of the Clay Conebushes (with flat seeds and sandpapery leaves), the Agulhas Conebush is very similar to the far more widespread Roughleaf Conebush. However, it has bigger flowerheads and is far prettier. Flowering from July to September, this species attracts flies and beetles to pollinate it. The fruit are stored in the cones on the female plants and the seeds are only released after a fire. Spectacular populations still occur in road verges around Wolwengat, and every effort should be made to ensure that our road verges are preserved! |
