Protea Atlas Final Database Check

Latest updates on Identification queries (June 2004).

Please try and get to the places identified in the Queries in. We have reduced the number of queries to 800 - the hardest - and your help in solving them will be appreciated.

Some areas have turned out to be problem "nests" The worst are:

  • Ld spissifolium on the Garden Route forelands - these are probably all
  • Ld salignum
  • Ld cordatum, Ld barkerae and Ld tinctum on the Groot Swartberg
  • Ld spissifolium fragrans and spissifolium in the Garcias Pass area.
  • Protea mundii and Pr punctata in the Kouga Mountains.

Two others problems seem largely unsolvable:

  • Pr acaulos vs Pr laevis in the Cederberg and Cold Bokkeveld.
  • Se effusa and cygnea everywhere.

A full list of edited (up to GEH) can be downloaded here (1MB)

If you want queries for a particular region or to check your queries, please contact me.

Editing is proceeding apace and we are almost 40% done up to (GEH). If you want to proof read your edits, please contact me.

Final Database Check (February 2004)

We are entering the final stages of checking the Protea Atlas Project data base prior to formatting for producing the text for the atlas.  Part of this task includes trying to explain why the errors we got or suspected were made. These have been on the web for some time now and we have requested anyone interested to check them up.  I enclose them here, in the pre "explanation" form. In the final form, when you open up the data on ArcExplorer or ArcGIS it will allow you to detect possible errors and give an explanation. These are the majority of those entries which will have such an explanation (we are also busy including all those that were verified at the office or by JPR and those which changed as a result of those verifications).

Notes:
* Please don't print the whole thing. Just those relevant to you.
* This is your last chance to comment on those difficult ID's Your last chance to let off steam and complain because Rebelo has not bloody well made the changes he was asked to (that was written especially for MCG to save her the need to type it up).
* If you think there were any others that are not mentioned, please tell me.
* The following is the format that I am using

text = still being checked.
!text = has been checked and removed from the database as a current outstanding query.
?text = current outstanding query: not resolvable from the database or herbarium records or correspondence.
* please pass on to those of your friends who do not have electronic facilities or are not in the list above.
* If you want to see your final listing, please email me a reply.
* These ID notes will not be in "The Atlas", purely on the electronic version.

Any comments will be appreciated. This is not the whole thing. We have typed up all the ARB and all of it will be available on the electronic version. Much of the exciting comments relevant to a specific species will be edited and included in "The Atlas".

This will be posted on the web at fortnightly intervals so please check this web page regularly.  We are going alphabetically through the data at 500-1000 SRS per week at this stage, but hope to speed up. Some atlassers will take longer than others (Thanks for all those notes AWA and VJK). If you can help with checking - please reply.
