Habit

The habit of proteas is very variable. In the Cape Floral Kingdom habit types include trees (Silver Tree, Wagon Tree), upright shrubs (Blackbeard Sugarbush), plants with a spherical underground bole from which several erect branches protrude (King Protea, Brownbeard Sugarbush), plants with creeping stems (Claspingleaf Sugarbush) or cushion plants, and, plants with underground stems (as in ferns). In temperate and tropical Africa, the last growth forms are absent. Proteas are never herbaceous or annual. Protea Atlas Logo
