FractualsKate Fodin came from Leeds to collect specimens of Awl-leaf Sugarbush - Protea subulifolia. A student of Bill Kunin, her sampling design included a fractal component. This meant that we had to collect samples from 3 plants one metre apart, this had to be repeated from 1000 m away, and both these levels had again to be repeated from two more sites each 10 km apart. It was a serious challenge finding localities that met these specifications. But we managed in the end. Kate will be extracting DNA sequences and looking at the genetic patterns over these scales. We sampled at Agulhas, Riviersonderend and the Langeberg. We look forward to a summary of her results in one of the closing issues of the Protea Atlas Newsletter. A rest on the way up to Bloupunt above Montague
