A solid black dot indicates where the species is found. Leucadendron rubrum - Spinning-top Conebush is
characterized by the pointed cones. The small leaves and flowerheads of the males are also
diagnostic - if one realizes that they actually belong to the same species. Although
widespread in the Cape, this is a rare species on the Peninsula. Historically it was
recorded from Lions Rump, above Three Anchor Bay, Camp's Bay, sand dunes near Wynberg (an
unusual habitat for this species), Little Lion's Head, and Orangekloof.
Ld rubr has only been. atlassed on the pipetrack and Lions Head, with a possibly
planted stand at Vredehoek - more data please! Does it no longer occur above Hout Bay? Is
it extinct in Orangekloof?
Any seasonal data on this species for the Peninsula would be appreciated. Why is it so
rare here? |
