Arrive after 12h00.
Set up camp.
Informal late afternoon walk to watch sunset towards Agterdam.
Evening: Braai at leisure - fires will be ready from 18h00.
Friday, 24 September 1999
1. Introductory roadside atlassing to introduce local proteas via Beaverlack and
to the Dwarsriver Gorge

Return to rendezvous via cross-country on the Skurweberg
choose a route to your abilities (from 3-10km (200m up, 100 down to 400m up, 100m down)
But through rugged country).
Evening: Lamb spit. Briefing. Choosing routes and leaders for Saturday. Slide
show on local proteas. Awards.
Saturday, 25 September 1999
(Walking distances exaggerated! - and times for average hiker
with full rucksack as per CNC pamphlets, plus 10% for atlassing- see map for details) (NB:
longer walks to start very early)
- Slackers Stroll
Die Tronk - 27 km on pamphlet 15 km on map 7 hours
Start-end at camp: Out along the Kliphuis River (west side) to Die Tronk
dropping 300m, **, back to camp via jeep track climb 300 m (** "rescue"
or ride up 300m available halfway (7km) for those tired)
- Stream Stormers
Grootklip - 30km on pamphlet 18 km on map 7 hours
Start-end at camp: Out along the Kliphuis River (east side) to Groot Kliphuis
dropping 200m ascending 400m, back via jeep track - drop 200m (stragglers to be picked up
by car at 17h00) last 4km on trail. There are many river crossings on this route and if
rains were recent and hard, this may have to be dropped
- Jailberg Joggers
Perdevlei - 25km on pamphlet 19 km on map 6.5 hours
Starting at Die Tronk (car) up to Perdevlei (400m up) on trial (!), traverse to Groot
Kliphuis 300m up and down on jeep track, and return on trail drop 400m down.
For the fit who want some better views.
- Groot Winterhoek Peak
- 16km on map 12 hours
The "Epic" of the weekend 1200m up and then again down. No fixed paths. For
the fit only. Come prepared if you want to join this (torch, extra rations, overnight
gear) for we will almost certainly spend the night on the mountain. A car will be left at
Die Tronk. We will rationalize gear, food and share the load on Friday night. Bring light
food. Fires not allowed! We will miss the evening function.
Evening: Casual own braaing. Slide show and quiz bring your own slides
(maximum 20) for quiz, humour, identification or moral. Prizes to be won. Guest talk by
David Osborne.
Sunday, 26 September 1999
Shorter trips to peaks around Perdevlei - no trails.
- Visgat Saddle
a short walk for those who want to see the views of the upper
Olifants River (only 250 m up, 5km round).
- Drostersberg
a slog for those not satisfied with Saturday (750m up, 8km
round).
- Calender Peak
an indeterminate (or interminable) walk south (600m up, up to
5-10km round)
- Groenberg
the northernmost target of the day, (600m up, 3km round)
Leave at your leisure
You will need to bring:
- Your food, some of it suitable for hiking
- Warn clothing - It will be very cold
- Warm food
- Rain gear, extra dry clothes.
- Sun tan lotion, hats.
- Tent, mattresses and sleeping bags. (unless booked into rooms),
- Overnight gear for Groot Winterhoek peak baggers. Prepare for snow hiking. You will have
to be fit.
Please ensure that your boots are walked in and that your rucksack (daypack) is
comfortable. River crossings are legendary - be prepared - you will get wet. Bring spare
socks and paper to dry out your boots.
A meal will only be provided on Friday night - you will be responsible for your own
catering (food and drink) for the rest of the time - dont rely on Porterville!
