Grootwinterhoek Annual Getaway 1999

Have a look at the Schedule, Species List and the Participants so far, for the Grootwinterhoek Annual Getaway.

The 1999 Annual Get-together will be held in the Groot Winterhoek Mountains from 23-26 September. Please diarize the date and make your booking soon. A non-refundable cover charge of R50.00 per person (+ R20.00 for additional family members) will secure your booking.

We will be staying at the "Groot Winterhoek" offices in the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area. This excellent venue has more than adequate facilities for even the most demanding atlassers. However, we have the choice of luxury accommodation only 7km away for those with a delicate disposition. Apart from five bedrooms, lounge, kitchen, a large garage which will function as a dormitory for up to forty, a shade-cloth shelter sleeping those who prefer the leopard’s cough, enough lawn for two soccer fields and twenty tents, and a covered braai area, we have another building and a barn available in reserve in the event of overcrowding.

Please note the following:

  • Please bring your own food, utensils, bed (and bedding), and your atlas kit.

  • The weather in September can be very cold – please bring rain and snow gear – Sneeugat is just round the corner. The nights are particularly cold.

  • Bring your swimming gear – there are some excellent swimming holes. I have been led to believe that the water is particularly bracing.

  • Please bring torch and space blanket, if you feel adven-turous. We will cater for all groups – Groot Winterhoek Peak is only a 1000m up and a mere 16km round trip. There will be full moon on the 25th to warm us.

The area is a wilderness area and so fires will only be allowed at the "offices". Bring a camping stove if you intend participating in any overnight walks.

There are many short walks (1.5-4 hours, flat, along paths) for those who need an interlude within the hectic atlassing schedule. There is also 30km of tracks that will need to be atlassed.

A detailed schedule of trips will be sent out in July to all participants. This will include a species list (there are lots) and maps of and access routes to the area. A pamphlet is available for the area from your nearest Cape Nature Conservation office.
