Two species occur on Piketberg ] The Woolly Powderpuff is probably quite abundant on Piketberg in moist seeps between 600 and 1000m, on South slopes. However, we have only 6 records of these species, and need many more. ] Sorocephulus imbricatus Tile-leaf Powderpuff has not been seen on "Piketberg mountains" since Bolus recorded it at the turn of the century. Does it still occur here? It has flat leaves, wider than 5 mm, and glandular hairs on the petals. It is Endangered with extinction, known from only a few other areas around Tulbagh! Please be careful when you see these rare proteas. Trampling can disturb their roots and they then die of root-rot fungus diseases. Being rare and highly localized they can easily be killed by careless disturbance and picking. |
