Hacking of Common Sugarbush - Protea caffra caffraOn 20 August 1999 the Protea Atlas Project visited Ramas Gate in the Eastern Cape. On a drive from Matatiele to Ramas Gate on the Lesotho border, we were horrified to discover that Common Sugarbush - Protea caffra caffra was being cut down with chain saws. The wood was presumably to be used for firewood. Is the Common Sugarbush doomed to extinction in this area? The relevant conservation authorities are aware of this problem.
