Protea Picking
Definitions:
| Data are of picking, but not necessary by commercial pickers. Occasionally, picking may even not be by human agents, as in the case of predation by Otomys irroratus (as may have been the case in the record for Serruria altiscapa). No extra checking of data have been done to sift out such cases. Furthermore, no evaluation of data has been done to ascertain if picking was casual or intensive. |  |
Data must therefore be treated with sufficient caution and interpreted with due regard to sample size and logistical constraints.
No Picking: No evidence of plucking.
Rare Picking: Some plucking evident - not obvious, plants unaffected.
Severe Picking: Plucking obvious, bushes badly stunted or stripped of all blossoms.
Plants were reported as planted if there were signs of planting. Data of species from outside of their distribution ranges have been checked to ascertain their validity. In many cases, these plants are planted or have escaped. These data have been reported separately from the bulk of the data in Appendix 1.
Note that the Protea Atlas Data Base covers the period 1991-1996, whereas the SAPPEX Report on the Fynbos Ornamental Industry covered the period 1993-1995.
