Paranomus reflexus Vandstadens Elongate Sceptre on the Baviaanskloofberge

Protea Atlas LogoI note that Paranomus reflexus is recorded as occurring on the van Stadens mountains near Port Elizabeth: Vogts (1982) states that populations are largely confined to the Otterford, Blouberg, Loerie and Longmore State Forests, where they are threatened by afforestation. Levyns (1970) cites a record from Doornkraal, 7˙km south of the Paul Sauer Dam.

In case this is of interest, as a member of the Mountain Club climbing in the Baviaanskloofberge, I have seen Paranomus reflexus south of Mac (33o56'S, 24o34'E) on the high sloping banks of the upper reaches of the Ys River. This site is some 35 km northeast of Otterford and 22 km north of Doornkraal, and the only record I know of from the Baviaanskloofberge. They were very beautiful and it was a good few (ca 3) years ago. I have been meaning to tell you ever since I became aware of the Proteaceae Atlas Project.
