Burchell's Protea Protea burchellii and others on Table Mountain

Protea Atlas LogoOne has to be extremely careful about species in the region of Kloof Nek and Lion's head. The Cape Town City Council's Parks and Forests Branch have planted many plant species here, some of which have become naturalized. These plantings have even been done in the fynbos, not just adjacent the roads, so beware!

Personally I would be inclined to believe Adamson and Salter in that Protea burchellii is extinct on Table Mountain (PAN 14: 5). The plants seen were almost certainly planted. The pity is that it is unlikely that official records exist of what species were planted where and when (or where they came from): the only information available is oral, based on memory. This information dies with the officials. For instance, I believe that the Silver Trees Ld arge on Devil's Peak above the Rhodes Memorial were originally planted - in the 1700's. Prof. Eugene Moll, UCT

If you have information on these plantings, or know anyone who is knowledgable about them, please contact Chris. It is important that these data are collected and collated. If the species have naturalized then please atlas them. Someone should specifically atlas the planted plants at Kloof Nek and Lion's head so that they are on the record: any volunteers?
