Ld brunioides flumenlupinum
We continually check up on dubious data. It is very easy to slip up and make a mistake. These possible errors are on the web (Atlas Data Requiring Verification) if you want to help us check up and improve the quality of our data. One such possible error was a record of Ld brunioides (no subspecies) recorded from between Eendekuil and Piketberg by Roger Jeffery. To our surprise, not only was the data correct, but it was the variety flumenlupinum. Before the Protea Atlas Project this taxon was only known from near Graafwater, where the 100 odd plants gave the taxon a Red Data Book status of Rare. Atlassers have discovered flumenlupinum from Graafwater in river valleys southwards to Aurora. This is our first record of this species and variety from the Piketberg valley. Given the widespread nature of flumenlupinum, it should surely have the rank of a subspecies (a geographically distinct race), rather than a variety (a race which co-occurs with the another race technically a race is a subspecies or variety of uncertain rank). Before formally doing so, we need to investigate the details of distribution between the two varieties in the Clanwilliam area, and follow up on some interesting records from Citrusdal-Keerom, which might also belong to flumenlupinum. If you can help, please remember to collect herbarium specimens ideally of flowering material. Tony Rebelo |
