How to use the conversion Table.
Longitude (Eastings)
Measure off your distance between the minute lines along the
top or bottom of the map to get your eastings. Look that up in
the column headed "Measurement in mm".
Look up the decimal minutes in the column headed Longitude
that corresponds to the total length of 1 minute. This will vary
from 37mm at the equator to 0mm at the south or north pole on a
1:50 000 scale map.
The value at the intersection is the decimal minutes. Thus 5
mm along from the left hand side (east of Greenwich) with 1
minute equalling 30.5 mm will give 0.16 minutes Longitude.
To convert to seconds multiply by 60. (The Protea Atlas
Project does not use seconds).
Latitude (Southings)
Measure off your distance between the minute lines along the
left or right hand side of the map to get your southings. Look
that up in the column headed "Measurement in mm".
Look up the decimal minutes in the column that corresponds to
37mm. This Latitude is a constant for anywhere on earth if you
are using a 1:50 000 scale map.
The value at the intersection is the decimal minutes. Thus 5
mm along from the top (in the southern hemisphere) will give 0.14
minutes Latitude.
To convert to seconds multiply by 60. (The Protea Atlas
Project does not use seconds).
Altitude Conversion
Older maps may still give altitude in feet. There are two ways
of converting this:
feet / 3.281 = metres
feet * 0.3048 = metres
A simple conversion table is given below. Look up the feet in
the left-hand column and read off the equivalent metres in the
right-hand column. Intermediate values can be obtained by adding.
Thus 275ft makes 250ft = 76m + 25ft = 8m and thus 275ft = 84m
