April/May/June/July 2001 Competition
The winner of this competition is Reuben Heydenrych who correctly suggests that
"Its a Helichrysum with a cleverly grafted Mimetes flower. Never trust a
photographer".
The below "2 July 2001 Update option 1" is correct. The plant is
indeed a daisy with a Silver Pagoda - Mimetes argenteus
flower placed in it. The different shapes of the leaves can be seen quite easily.
The photograph was taken in the grassy fynbos mountains of the Suurberg in the Eastern
Cape in March, 2001 on a Protea Atlas field trip. The photograph was taken by Nigel
Forshaw. Watch this space for more about the story of this picture in September, 2001.

4 June 2001 Update
No correct answers were submitted by 31 May 2001. It seems that you have been
struggling to make sense of this photograph so here are two clues.
- Are all the leaves on the plant the same shape?
- Was the photograph taken in fynbos or a grassland?
2 July 2001 Update
No correct answers were submitted by 30 June 2001. Which is the correct answer?
- This was a trick to fool the photographer. The rounded leaf and flower are from a
Mimetes and the rest of the plant is an everlasting daisy. Never trust a photographer.
- This is a new hybrid plant seen in the Suurberg National Park near Addo. It is a cross
between a Mimetes and an everlasting daisy. Hybrids between plants are common in nature.
- This is the latest in genetic engineering. At last the plant scientists have caught up
with the animal scientists and mixed the genes between a Mimetes and an everlasting daisy.
In a few years we will be able to pick our tamotoes off the bushes already canned.
- This is the latest new species recently found by Protea Atlassers in the Suurberg
National Park near Addo. It is a Pagoda that will be named Mimetes vinigaremontana.
It appears to be confined to the National Park and is its only endemic plant species found
to date!
